Ferrous scrap in Cape May County

Scrap steel & iron prices

Steel beams, plate, pipe, rebar, tools, grills, bed frames, sheds and swing sets. If a magnet sticks to it, it’s ferrous scrap, and we buy it by the pound.

Ferrous vs. non-ferrous metal

Ferrous metals contain iron and stick to a magnet. Steel and iron are the most common metals there are, so they pay less per pound than copper or aluminum, but they’re heavy, and a truck or trailer load adds up fast.

Non-ferrous metals such as copper, brass and aluminum don’t stick to a magnet and are worth more. Keep a magnet in your truck: anything that doesn’t stick should go in a separate pile.

Stainless steel is the exception. Most stainless is only slightly magnetic or not magnetic at all, and it’s worth more than regular steel, so keep it separate too.

Bring your material Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM, in a vehicle with a valid license plate, along with a valid state-issued photo ID. No appointment needed.

Grades we buy

  • #1 prepared steel. Heavy steel, about ¼ inch thick or more, cut to size (generally no longer than about 5 feet by 2 feet). Beams, plate, heavy pipe and structural steel.
  • #1 steel unprepared. The same heavy steel, but too long or bulky and still needing to be cut.
  • Light iron. Thinner steel such as sheet metal, grills, bed frames, file cabinets, shelving, lawn equipment and appliances. Also called sheet iron or tin.
  • Clean stainless steel. Stainless sinks, restaurant equipment, tanks and sheet, with no other metals attached.

How to get the best price

  • Pull the non-ferrous off. Copper, brass and aluminum attached to steel get paid at the steel price.
  • Cut heavy steel to size if you can; prepared steel pays more than unprepared.
  • Drain fluids and remove fuel. Lawn mowers, engines and tanks must be drained, with gas tanks removed or empty.
  • Remove wood, concrete and trash. Non-metal material is deducted.

Steel questions

Ferrous metals contain iron and stick to a magnet, like steel and iron. Non-ferrous metals, like copper, aluminum and brass, don’t stick to a magnet. Non-ferrous metals are generally worth more per pound.

Light iron is thin steel such as sheet metal, grills, appliances, bed frames and shelving. It’s the most common ferrous grade for household scrap.

Yes. Clean stainless steel pays more than regular steel. Most stainless is non-magnetic or only weakly magnetic, so keep it separate from your steel pile.
